What to know before you call
- · Emergency medical cover outside Phnom Penh and Siem Reap is thin. In practice many people are driven to hospital by whoever is nearest rather than waiting for an ambulance — if someone can drive, that is often the faster answer.
- · Operators are unlikely to speak English outside the two main cities. If you are at a hotel or a guesthouse, having staff make the call will get help there sooner than making it yourself.
- · For anything serious, Bangkok is the nearest centre for major trauma and most insurers will evacuate there. Check that your policy includes medical evacuation before you travel, not after.
Say your location first
Give where you are before you describe what has happened. A call can drop; an address already spoken still gets help moving. Read the town, then the street or the landmark, then the building. If you have coordinates on your phone, read those out — they work regardless of language.
We have not printed Khmer phrases here, because a phrase mangled by transliteration costs time in a call where seconds matter. Ask a Khmer speaker near you to make the call — a hotel, a guesthouse, a shop owner. That is genuinely the faster route.

- How reliable is the ambulance service in Cambodia?
- It is limited outside Phnom Penh and Siem Reap. Being driven to a hospital by someone nearby is often faster than waiting, and for serious injuries most insurers evacuate to Bangkok.
- Do Cambodian emergency operators speak English?
- Sometimes in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, rarely elsewhere. If a Khmer speaker is nearby, ask them to make the call.
